Kyo-machiya

You are cordially invited to unveil the charm of Kyoto at "Watari" araka-tanaka , which is conveniently located at a pleasant 3-minute walk from the Togetsukyo bridge in Arashiyama. "Watari" araka-tanaka , a century-old 1-story Kyo-machiya, is mindfully restored by the concerted efforts of our Kyoto born and raised owner and a seasoned Kyoto artisan. Let’s savor the scent of history, and the breath of culture, in a pure Kyoto aesthetic, which delicately merges the traditional with the modern.
About the room
Upon entering through the front door, enjoy playing with stepping stones made of Tamba stone, which is no longer mined.
Natural materials are used throughout, and to preserve the elements of a traditional Kyoto machiya, straw is kneaded into the walls and the clay walls are from Fushimi, Kyoto, a valuable material used in tea rooms. The use of real natural materials and Japanese colors allows the visitor to experience the wabi-sabi aesthetic. The structure has been reinforced, and to maintain the authenticity of a Kyo-machiya, the original daikoku-bashira and beams have been exposed, and by eliminating the traditionally low ceiling panels, the spacious, modern space is open.
