Collaboration of Kyoto owner x local craftsman
Renovation of a 100-year-old dilapidated Kyo- machiya. It was a collaborative effort between the owner, who was born and raised in Kyoto, and local craftsmen who have long been involved in the restoration of traditional houses, with the goal of preserving the house for future generations. The owner, who had once left his hometown, was able to understand the qualities of the Kyo-machiya and Kyoto, and through dialogue with the craftsmen onsite, the project was realized. Once you open the front door, you may be puzzled, it may be for a brief moment again, but we cherished the feeling of going back in time to decades ago.
While keeping the old existing things, we also focused on the quality of the wood for beams and pillars, natural materials such as clay walls, and to the limit of compromise. And even when the lighting fixtures are turned off, our Kyo-machiya is a traditional house itself, incorporating the taste of natural light leaking through the shoji slide door. We have created a space that is gentle to the body and soul where you can stay with peace of mind.
Yukimi-shoji screens, Engawa, Tsuboniwa garden, lanterns and festival masks made by local craftsmen, "Gaishi-biki" wiring that is rarely seen anymore, clay walls, and "hi-no-yohin" signboards in the kitchen (......) will make you want to say, "I'm home" as soon as you open the front door.
